Sorry, my failure: Jumper JP1 is actually not installed. I have mistaken JP1 with a wire bridge which has to be installed. Actually JP1 would be on another place, but no option to install it on the programmer - so it is still open -as it should be.
But still same problem: avrdude: initializaton failed: -1
